Appliances

Not checked yet.

A check of kitchen and other appliances: urns, fridges, stoves, microwaves, dishwashers and heaters. If anything marked as safety-critical fails, switch it off, unplug it and report it.

Electrical

Cords, plugs and switches are undamaged, with no burn marks and no warm plugs
The test and tag is current (AS/NZS 3760)
Plugged straight into a wall socket, not an overloaded board, and the safety switch (RCD) trips when you press its test button
Heaters, urns and other heating appliances are switched off when the building is empty

Heat and fire

The stove, oven, hot plates and rangehood are clean, with no built-up grease
Gas appliances (if any): hoses and connections have no leaks (test with soapy water, never a flame) and cylinders are upright and secured (N/A if no gas)
A fire blanket and fire extinguisher are close by, in date and easy to reach
Hot water urn is stable, the tap and lid work, nothing leaks, the cord cannot be tripped over, and it is kept out of children’s reach
Portable heaters are at least 1 metre from curtains and furniture, not covered, and the tip-over switch works (N/A if none)

Fridges, washers and microwaves

Fridge and freezer door seals are tight and the units are cold
Dishwasher door latch works, nothing leaks, and detergent is stored away from children
Microwave door seals, hinges and latch are undamaged and there is no sparking

Overall

It is safe to use today
